Emoji stories and a new serial coming soon...

WRITING IN THE SHADOWS

Hey Reader,

How are you doing?

Back in April of 2024 I was playing around with writing super short flash pieces based on random strings of emojis. Here are a couple that I posted then:

Mike’s decision to moon at the gorilla was unfortunate. We buried him at sea, as he wished, but a lightning bolt set his boat on fire, so he had a viking funeral instead.

I love cowboy movies but my boyfriend prefers cop thrillers. He also likes eating red apples dressed as a witch. Dinnertime can be strange. Never mind, I have Arthur, my pet eagle, to keep me company.

Here are a couple of new ones I wrote recently.

The cruise ship repairs had to stop while we threw a lifebuoy to Tim. Always daydreaming about the next concert he was going to, he hadn’t spotted the giant spider creeping up on him until the last second, when he screamed and jumped into the sea. Poor Tim, he never does have any luck with the wildlife. Last year a T-Rex stepped on him, and Tim spent the rest of the summer in a wheelchair.

Sam’s high temperature meant he had to take the day off school. Thank God for that, thought Sam, as his teacher Mrs Edwards was acting weird. Every time Sam raised his hand in class, Mrs Edwards stomped over to him on her mechanical leg and planted a big lipsticky kiss on his forehead.

But hey, why am I doing all the work? Take a look at the emoji string below and write your own story. Send it to me and I will publish my favourite in this newsletter. I will also send out a prize, maybe a 100% discount voucher for my shop.

In other news I am currently working on a new serialised story for you, Le Grande Mysterieux. Think Sherlock Holmes investigating supernatural occurrences and you will be close enough.

More news soon.

And finally, you may have noticed this email has arrived in your inbox a day later than usual. I'd like to blame technology, or gremlins, or whatever, but it was me. I've been a little too busy recently, and consequently a little disorganised.

Back to the usual schedule next week.

Best wishes,
Ken
