Hey!
Have you done all your Christmas shopping yet? I have a confession to make, we haven't even started ours yet!
To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure how December has turned up so damn fast, yet again. It seems like only last week I was enjoying the summer.
Anyway, there's lots to read in this week's email, so I will get right on with it.
Le Grande Mysterieux
You may have seen mention of Le Grande Mysterieux in my previous newsletters. This week I thought I would tell you a little more, and ask for your help with the book cover.
The Mysterieux stories are set in a slightly alternate London in the 1880s. Hints of magic erupt into discordant life occasionally, but mostly this London is recognisable as the London of Jack the Ripper and Queen Victoria.
Mysterieux himself is a former stage magician who abandoned his career after a performance of his ended in tragedy. Now he lives a solitary existence in his house, except he's not quite alone and ... well, that would be telling too much.
His first story will be with you soon, where I will introduce other series characters, including Silas Tredwell (our narrator), Charlotte Fenwick, Aldous Ashlock and Creepum Flinch.
Here is the blurb for the first story, coming soon.
When a winged taxidermy cat arrives at Lord Fenwick’s home and plunges him into a deep, unnatural trance, his niece Charlotte Fenwick seeks out Silas Tredwell for help. Joined by the eccentric and disgraced stage magician Mysterieux, Silas and Charlotte follow the creature’s grim origin through London’s fog-soaked streets, drawn toward a mystery as grotesque as it is unfathomable.
Take my poll!
I'm already thinking ahead to publishing the first collection of Mysterieux stories and have been busy sourcing potential covers. Please help me decide between them by voting for your favourite.
The poll is below the third cover illustration. You can only choose one!

The Emoji Story Winner
I had some great entries for the Emoji Story competition, but there can be only one winner.
This from Eric P is fantastic:
"I see you," said St. Nick, peering down the fireplace chimney. "Put that ring back in the box and I'll pretend like you were never here." This stinks, thought the thief as he dropped the prize and ran out the door, straight into oncoming traffic. Now his ghost cries over the house every Christmas.
Well done, Eric, and your voucher is on its way to you right now.
I might run more competitions in the future. What do you think?
That's all for today. Writing in the Shadows is taking a week off next week, as I have too much going on at the moment, but we will be back soon.
Cheers,
Ken
